Highest cases of amputations for a natural disaster ever
Saturday, January 30th, 2010The Haiti Quake quite possibly has the highest amount of amputations for a natural disaster in recorded history. Never before have so many people lost their limbs in a natural disaster. A unique convergence of circumstances is to blame. Haiti’s poverty, history and unique geological location led to this disastrous happenstance.
- Here is an interesting article by MSNBC about the amputation-rate in Jimani. Interestingly enough they refer to the former orphanage-turned-ward Good Samaritan as a ‘hospital’.
- Here is a past post on this blog about why the amputations were necessary.
- Why Haiti? Below you will find an interactive map that explain Haiti’s geological location that led to the quake, a time frame of the main quake, as well as the aftershocks.
